Just a quick drive-by on the ol' blog to show you peeks of the most recent sessions.

This magical session with forty family members was challenging and amazing and blessing all at once. :)

You might recognize Tiny Man...he's been featured here before and has come back again for his summer pictures. Thank goodness, because seriously??? How cute is he? I am so happy to be a part of his life and watch him grow up! Those senior pictures will be here way too soon!

The X Family should be recognizable to you as well. They are one of my Family Growth plan families and can you believe Baby Sister C is already three months old??? I can't believe it! This family keeps a piece of my heart every time I photograph them!

Your eyes do not deceive you! That is an adult summer kickball league. And they are FAB! I had so much fun photographing them during their championship games as well as their old school style team photos. Thanks Kick Rocks for a great time!

And this little soon-to-be military wife is so much fun! We are working on a special gift for their wedding in September and I can't wait to meet up with her for her selections and further planning! Their love is palpable, as you can see by the stack of letters he has sent her, sometimes more than five a day!

After about a year of anticipation, I finally got to photograph this handsome fella! Isn't he adorable?? He's very curious about his surroundings...so much so we had out work cut out for us. But he didn't disappoint, he gave us some GOOD STUFF!

This little guy is one of four family members that I had the unique experience of photographing. I loved spending a portion of my Monday morning with them. It was a great way to start the day. I truly feel blessed for having this time with them.

Thank you to all my clients who have helped make this year a wonderful and inspiring one.

Fan-Photog-Tastic Day Out

In the journey to mainstream my photography business and become "legitimate" in my own eyes, (which let's face it, is often harder than you might know) I have begun to form relationships with what I am beginning to believe are my "peers". Other photographers. I am forming non-competitive relationships with them; and I LOVE it. I love that we can "talk shop" and I don't feel like I am conversing with the "enemy". We are able to let our defenses down, trust one another, learn from one another and just have fun.

The biggest part of this, for me, was the trust part. By nature, I don't naturally trust others. And don't even get me started on the "not seeing value in my work" and "selling myself short". But these women have shown me that it is safe to let my defenses down, and I thank them for it. These relationships are invaluable to me. I hope they know just how much they mean in my world and how lucky I feel to know them.

So, on a lighter note (didn't originally intend to get so deep on ya!)...ahem...

My now-friends and fellow photographers, Kara, owner of Kara Rue Photography, and Brea, owner of CYE Photography decided we'd should quit talkin' about it and actually plan a photography playdate. We brought our kids and cameras and met up at Discovery Park in Seattle. Not to be deterred by the fact that the park was under renovation and several parts of it were unavailable to us, we found exactly what we were looking for.

An over grown field.

That was yummily warm and inviting, and even had a fence at one end.

We turned our kids loose and just roamed around, trying this, attempting that, comparing f-stops and ISOs and tips and even some "ooohs" and "aah, you got something way better than I did!" as we clicked away happily.

The kids certainly earned the playground time. They were cooperative and wonderful and sweet! All six of them-ranging from twelve years old to just under a year old. Amazing children.

And at the end I even handed my camera off to my tween so she could get us being SUPER PROFESSIONAL.

In the name of full disclosure...there was all that sweetness I described above, but then there was some of this...

Running away, falling down, wailing, chillin' and kickin' back in the grass.

We moms with cameras will go to just about ANY length to get the shot. As you'll see below. But it was ALL worth it. :)

Take a Peek: The L Family [Lynnwood Family Photographer]

It's been some time since I gave you a Take a Peek into a session here on the blog.

This wonderful family let me hang out with them at a local park this morning. What a great way to start my day!

The brother goes to preschool with my little guy and I have been itching since January to photograph them all!

We had a great time running, jumping and exploring. Mom has a great eye and can spot squirrels and woodpeckers like nobody's business! Her beautiful kids have inherited that skill as well.

Aren't they ADORABLE!?!

I'm behind on blogging. No surprise there, eh? At least my clients get their galleries, images and prints early or on time...one goal at a time, yes? ;)

But that's okay; it means I'm busy!

It means that people trust me with their families most treasured moments.

Here are a few of MY family's treasured moments from this 4th of July. I hope you got to spend it being thankful for our freedom and your family.

My wonderful husband humored me (and truly, I think he just wanted to be part of the fun) by participating in my first attempt at the firework trick you see up there. :) It was fun. And I'm glad I read that wonderful tutorial (can't remember which fellow photog posted it now though-sorry!) just before heading out to celebrate the 4th!

A Short Update

Hi there!

I know, I know...it's been awhile...too long, really.

My sincerest apologies for my absence...but I've been. B.U.S.Y.!

A little of what I've been up to...(and remember, you can always see what I'm up to by clicking "portfolio" on the right side of this site, as well as on facebook!)

(Wow, this really puts things in perspective. I am not used to seeing this all together in one place!)

In other news, Urban Utopia Photography will be undergoing lots of changes this summer, if everything goes as I see it in my very full imagination. Among the changes are a new website (a real one), logo, branding, prices and packages and even some new fun adventures!

Get your summer sessions on my calendar quickly before the dates are snagged.

Also, over on facebook I am running a Twilight inspired special! Usually, facebook specials are exclusive to facebook "likers" only, but in this case, I'm going to make an exception!

With the release of Eclipse, I am offering up limited amounts of Twilight-esque sessions. I'll even help you with styling (for free!) and you can add on professional makeup for a low additional fee. For $75 you get an hour to an hour and a half of photography and a mini book with images from your session. Sounds glittery and fabulous, doesn't it? Take a Peek: {Committed to Love} S + C

Just when I think it can't get any better...it does!

I always say what an honor and privilege it is to work with my clients. Often, these words are "starter" words, because the ones that cover exactly how I feel about these sessions escape me.

Today was one of those sessions.

It started off like this:

Curious how she ended up completely soaking wet?

Well, it turns out Miss S has a bit of a spunky side. She had no qualms about jumping headlong into the icy 13 degree Puget Sound. We started off with their feet in the water, and when Mr. C couldn't take anymore and bailed from the water, she showed us she wasn't done. Nor was she kidding. A mermaid escaped, swam and gave me some of the most amazing shots!

I can't wait for their wedding! I can only imagine what is in store for these two.

Their loves shines through in the way they look at each other, look for each other and live to love one another. So much love and luck is wished for them!

Thank you from the bottom of my still-beating-wildly heart!

Take a Peek: She's Having a Baby ~ The X Family

Some experiences are just moving. Some sessions are just special.

Today gave me both of these. One moving, special session.

A couple months ago, I offered a free maternity session on my facebook page. Since I had two expecting mothers reply to this request, I decided that I would work with both of them.

And this decision couldn't have worked out better!

Today, I had the distinct pleasure of photographing the beautifully sweet X Family. The three of them will be welcoming a new baby girl the first week of May, and they couldn't be more ready, big brother included.

It's no secret that I cry at weddings...but at a maternity session? Today was a first. But you'll have to wait until later to see the one that brought me to misty eyes. :)

Oh BABY!

I love living vicariously through pregnant ladies.

I've been pregnant twice, and my experiences couldn't have been more different.

I have all the children I need, so when I shoot pregnant mamas and their loving partners, I get all giddy.

Giddy for them.

Giddy for the new life they are all about to have.

Giddy for new baby smells, sounds, etc.

Babies make me giddy.

Take a Peek: T + J {Committed to Love}

I love LOVE.

I really do.

Today, I got a shining new glimpse at love in the form of a fabulous couple. I was honored to photograph an engagement session for T & J.

They chose a wonderful location that mixed beautiful scenery, yummy texture and loads of childlike fun. Just like them.

We joked like crazy.

They poked fun at each other.

And their loves smacked you in the kisser every time they looked at each other.

That's the love I love.

March Mash-up

We over at Urban Utopia Photography have been BU-SY!

And because of that, I have neglected giving my blog some love. How can I expect you to, if I don't??

Since I am still figuring out how I want to present an official newsletter to you fine folks, but I still want to get the information to you, I am going to just give you a long winded mash-up here for this month. (With hopes that April will bring a REAL newsletter your way.)

As you may have seen, we had a very successful Saint Patrick's Day event. There were tons of smiles, a few tears and a boatload of fun! We can't wait to do it again next year!

Next up is our first annual Easter Portrait Event. We have a lot of great ideas and a fantastic location to do our session this time around. More info on that session (with limited availability, so get your name on the schedule quick!):

We have a few more events I would like to give you a head's up on, with details following a little closer to the actual event. However, I want to let those who would like to get a spot, write it on their calendars!

April 24th (Saturday): Mother's Day Mini Sessions (this event will go all day!)

May 15th (Saturday): Boudoir Event (this event will go all day and night at a local hotel)

June 5th (Saturday): Father's Day Mini Sessions (this event will also go all day!)

Throw in some family sessions, cake smashes and first birthdays (along with other birthdays), maternity sessions, couples sessions and even some wedding bookings and it makes for a GREAT Spring! I am very excited. What this means for you is that if you want a session, book it SOON, as my calendar is filling up fast!

In the coming months Urban Utopia Photography will have the opportunity to participate in some charity events as well as work with a local non-profit agency. As these events are in the final stages of negotiations, I look forward to sharing them with you after the event! I am very, very excited to get to participate, donate and join a wonderful cause!

This month I got to attend the Sandy Puc Family Tour and learned so much about the photography industry as well as got the chance to meet up with some inspiring local photographers that I have met once before or have wanted to for awhile! I discovered the path I'd like my business to go down and am excited to get underway! First things first, yes? I have a friend who has a design background working on a custom logo for me...here's to hoping I don't drive him nuts deciding what I like! I am excited to finalize it and use it until you are sick of it! :)

Oh Baby!

Boy am I behind!

I didn't give you a Take a Peek of these little guys, did I??

First we have Baby J, making four in this adorable household.

He wasn't a fan of the natural light at first, but he came around. He is already independent and didn't want anything to do with being posed. He was so precious I didn't mind! Well, don't take my word for it:

Then I got to have a session with the teeny tiny Baby O. He is the first child for a family dear to my heart. His mommy has watched our children for several years and watched over them on a daily basis. We did this session at my house so we had a lot of creative leeway, used a ton of props and had a good ol' time.

Social Networking

I told myself I'd make a more concentrated effort to blog more than just Take a Peeks, and pricing and promotions...so, as that hasn't happened yet, here's a half-and-half type post!

It amazes me that just two years ago, I scoffed at just about everyone I knew that was on a social networking site (i.e. myspace, facebook, etc.). The ones that were actively using more than one??? Woooo, Doggy...they really got my scorn. And just about a year ago, I had no idea that "tweeting" was something other than what a bird did as it sat on my fence enjoying the crisp spring air.

Now? Now, I take it ALL back. I take back the doubt, the scorn and the scoffing!
Why?
Because social networking has helped me become the successful photographer that I am. I have been able to meet other photographers and become friends with some amazing people. Facebook has helped me keep up with (and in some cases, get back in contact with) old and new friends, acquaintances and family, and while often times it gives me (us?) a false sense of staying connected, it is usually better than no contact at all. And? I just plain enjoy it.

I have a personal myspace page that I don't check or even visit on a regular basis (really, I think I just need to close it). For me, Facebook is just easier to use, doesn't hurt my eyes, doesn't have random music blaring out of my speakers...and well...just feels more "adult" (gasp!).

So, friends and fans, that is where you can find me. On Facebook. Often. I update. I check in. (A lot.) I can even be found (sometimes) on Twitter.

This boy holds a special place in my heart!

Not only is his mama a very close friend of mine, but we are lucky enough to live right next door to his family. He is always up for a laugh and a silly face and best of all a photo. "Shy" and "timid" are NOT in his vocabulary...I am so glad!

I had so many images to look at from his "I'm 6!" session yesterday, I have a smile plastered to my face! We had SUCH a great time. Dad even jumped in some with him!

Custom photography is the best photographic investment you can make for your family.
All sessions with Urban Utopia Photography are done in the setting of your choice. Whether that be a local park, a beach, an urban setting or your own home, I will come to you! Capturing the most natural of moments is what I truly enjoy.

The following packages are offered as of January 29, 2010 and are subject to change without notice. Any sessions booked are locked in to the current pricing.

You are not limited to the options below. If there is something you don't see here, or a location or session you have an idea for, just ask! We'll make it happen!

General Session ~ Digital: $125

Up to one hour of unlimited photography at any location within a 20 mile radius of the 98204 zip code (mileage fee applies to all locations outside this specification)
Session fee covers up to four subjects (includes people and pets!), fee for each additional subject is $15.
Images digitally processed and enhanced (this may include color, black and white or artistically enhanced - you can expect a variety of images and enhancements)
Online gallery for image preview and selection
Up to five high resolution digital images on cd, including print release for you to use and reproduce to suit your needs

General Session ~ Prints: $75

Up to one hour of unlimited photography at any location within a 20 mile radius of the 98204 zip code (mileage fee applies to all locations outside this specification)
Images digitally processed and enhanced (this may include color, black and white or artistically enhanced - you can expect a variety of images and enhancements)
Online gallery for image preview and selection
Requires minimum print order of $75 (in addition to Session fee. Session fee covers photographer's time and talent.)

Mini Sessions are offered by request and can be customized as a digital package or a print package. Just ask!

Event Packages start at $150 an hour and all inclusions are based on your specific needs for your event. I would love to photograph your birthday, shower or any other type of event. (Excludes weddings.)

Wedding Packages start at $500, however you won't see specific pricing here as Urban Utopia Photography feels that every wedding is unique, so every package is unique as well. Packages are completely customizable to make your day memorable. Bonus: ALL wedding packages include a FREE one hour engagement session!

All prints and print products are offered a la cart. Print prices are listed below, additional pricing by request.

Textures and Actions

I feel very lucky as a blossoming photographer to be able to benefit from others' willingness to share their knowledge.
I have had several photographers (even local ones) help me learn a new "trick" or technique that has skyrocketed my skill and confidence as a photographer.
I have thus been able to experiment and not be hard on myself if I don't fall in love with the end result.

My newest love and source of all things inspiring and teaching is The Maternal Lens. Today, they are spreading the word about Florabella Actions...which, I must say are divine. I love them so much and would love to be able to win this giveaway to play with and grow and pass along to my clients as I use them on their images....ahhhh...bliss.

Take a Peek: We are Family ~ B Family Generations

As I've said before, this is one of my favorite families EVER. It certainly helps that they are my friends, and have one of the cutest little dudes I've ever known.

This time around I got to photograph them with Grama and Grampa from Texas.

And after only a moment with them all, you can feel just how much Grama and Grampa love that little guy. Nothing was off limits when he wanted to play.

Horsey? Sure!

Take a Peek: We are Family ~ B Family

I had the distinct privilege to photograph my long time friend with her son. Her boy is so amazingly adorable, and such a ham! I love that he wore his cowboy hat and boots to their session - they are so him.

Despite how cold it was outside and the rain that eventually made us call it quits, they were real troopers. Their adoration of each other pulls at my heart strings. You are one strong Mama, Ms. K and I love you guys!

Take a Peek: B + C Wedding

I love weddings.

I truly, truly enjoy them. I cry at EVERY wedding. Sometimes it's just a little trickle down the cheek, other times it's just wet eyes.

Then there are weddings like the one I was honored to do yesterday. This was a family wedding, and it truly was. Every one was involved, and everyone was happy to be a part of it.

B & C joined their families yesterday in the most intimate ceremony I have been a party to. It was quite moving. (As my Creative Director/Assistant said: "It's like they have little hearts floating over their heads". And it was SO true.)

And talk about beautiful, white and red and silver and deliciousness.

Well, here - judge for yourself.

So lovely.

Oh, B Family.
Where do I even start???
This family holds a special place in my heart. Little Miss M, is my son's "bef fwend". Her mommy is one of mine. She is also my assistant/creative director. Daddy loathes getting his picture taken, however this time he was VERY cooperative. And last but not least, Little Man L...those cheeks!!!

I did mean the ones on his face. But these ones are pretty darn cute too!

Hello Babies!!!

I photographed the littlest L a few weeks back when she was about a week old. She's wasn't a lot bigger today, but she was accompanied by her sister and brother. These kids hold a special place in my heart...they are my godkids.

Today's session with Daddy was a lesson for all of us. The babies are the boss. In case we weren't sure! :)

Daddy was really laid back and said he just wanted to be sure to have ONE picture of each kid with him, one of the three kids, and one of everybody and he'd be happy. Well, we got more than that, of course so I hope he is pleased (even if he HATES having is own picture taken...what a good sport.)

You know, the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of the RG family is LOVE. They truly, truly LOVE each other.

Anytime I asked Miss A to sit with her brother, she LOVED him. She would grab him and hug him or hold his hand. The same thing happened when I asked Lil Man N to pose with his mom, he LOVED her. He just latched himself onto her and kissed her! No prompting needed with that little guy.When I asked either of them to sit with mom or dad, LOVE just oozed out of every smile, kiss and embrace!

And seriously? Mom and Dad?? More LOVE. I didn't even have to ask him to kiss her, he just did.

Ahhh...LOVE. It was most definitely in the air today.

Wow, what a wonderful opportunity.

I was asked to take family portraits for one of the most beautiful families! With mom and dad, Big Brother P, Little Sister M and Baby E you can't go wrong. This family opened their home to me today and I am so glad they made the choice to have their photos there, as the holiday decorations were enviable!

We couldn't have requested better weather for today's family session with the B Family! We were all excited to do their session at Country Village in Bothell. This is the second family I have gotten to photograph there (See also: the M Family from this summer, in the archives), and I love how many location options there are all in one place!

I feel so special to be able to photograph them again this year, and to watch little man A grow and grow. He has grown so much since last year's photos!

The first ever Fall Portrait Promo sessions were today. The weather was perfect (a little windy in the morning, but *hurray* for no rain!), the families were gorgeous and the photographer is HAPPY. :)

Now, for your sneak peek!

Let me introduce you to the A Family. This is the first time I have photographed this beautiful couple and their wonderful chocolate spotted baby! It was great to reconnect with a friend as an added bonus. Their baby was SO cooperative. I really need to get one of those squeaky chipmunks that she just loved. :)

I was also pleased to photography the L Family - as a unit, finally. I have been friends with Mama L for almost fifteen years (that makes me feel old), and am Fairy Godmother to the little ones (well, not officially yet for the newest little L). Big Brother L was a very good sport and really enjoyed getting Little Sister L to laugh.

Just two sessions today after all, due to illnesses. I hope all my clients feel better soon so we can get those Christmas photos done in time! Fingers crossed for you.

Rain, Rain, Go Away - Or not.
Our typical Pacific Northwest Fall weather took hold today and rained our session out from it's original location. Never fear, we have some wonderful attractions in the Northwest so we took full advantage of one of them today.

Let me introduce you to the fun loving, wonderful family I had the honor of photographing today. I think little Miss S was one of the most cooperative 11 months old girls I have ever encountered.

My passion is to capture your utopia.

This is the goal I have in mind every time I pick up my camera and aim it at you, your family, your children, your wedding, your event or any other moment you wish to have captured forever.

I am a unique on-location photographer, specializing in hip, urban, outdoor locations (though I am certainly open to any and all locations whether they be indoor or outdoor!). I strive to keep our session fun, relaxed and enjoyable for everyone. I can be silly and fun, yet always remain professional.

I have a difficult time describing my photography style, as I don't feel that I shoot in any one style. I am open minded about every shot and every session brings something unique, diverse and challenging. I love to catch a creative, edgy shot, yet understand that sometimes a more traditional approach is the way to go. I am not afraid to get dirty and have been known to crawl around on the ground to get the perfect shot!
